I quite like the live action Transformers films. They’re all largely awful, although the most recent two Bumblebee and Rise Of The Beasts, were a cut above the usual blur of nu-metal and tinfoil. I like Beast Wars, so it was great to see characters from that iteration of Transformers up on the big screen. I do like Transformers toys too, but have passed on a lot of the Studio Series stuff. Apelinq was on offer on Amazon and he’s quite a deep cut to have been picked up for the film, so I’ve had a punt. In robot mode, Apelinq looks pretty great, dressing up the usual sea of grey plastics these live action figures have with some dark greys and silver. Doesn’t sound very exciting, but it makes the figure look good. The forearm armour and sticky outy bits on the left shoulder pauldron plus new head sculpt add a bit of character and definition to what is Optimus Primal in different colours. As with all Primal toys, this excels in robot mode looking powerful and acrobatic, packing a serious amount of articulation to rival the best action figures. Apelinq wields two crescent shaped blades, which I do like but am a but would have preferred some the ability to clip these to the forearms in robot mode, rather than having to be handheld. They can also clip onto the chain he comes with which I appreciate. Transformation is pretty simple and whilst good, the resulting Ape/ Gorilla mode is a bit static and the hind legs look a bit of a messy jumble of bits and bobs. I do like that the beast mode mouth opens though, so you can have him hold the Transwarp Carrot in it’s mouth. Whilst accurate to the source material, translucent plastics would have been a better choice for this maguffin as it does look more like Apelinq is some sort of advert for your 5-a-day. Whilst a generally very well executed figure, it does feel very loose in the joints. I like it, but it’s not a total slam dunk. A solid effort overall.
