The game closely resembles the shopping list game. Each child selects a finished meal card to prepare. Then, all the ingredient and utensil cards are laid face down on the table. Players take turns flipping a card over to check if it matches their placemat. If it doesn’t, they show it to everyone else in case someone else has it, and then turn it face down. This continues until a player collects all the ingredients and utensils on their card. Next, they spin the game spinner, which has various pictures including a plate that must be spun first to win one of the plate pieces for serving their food. After that, they need to land on the waiting child picture to wait for their meal to cook. Finally, they plate their food and eat. The winner is the first to complete all these steps and place their food on the plate.

In my opinion, this game is excellent for teaching young children patience and turn-taking while enhancing their memory skills and familiarizing them with everyday items. Despite the educational aspects, it remains fun, making kids eager to play repeatedly. However, with seven pieces to find on each of the five cards, it can be challenging for younger children to remember all 35 cards. Therefore, I usually set it up for them, especially if only two are playing. By removing a few cards and their matching pieces, it becomes simpler for my children aged two, four, and five. As they grow older, the game can be made more challenging, requiring them to remember all the cards, but this is how we currently enjoy it.

Like other games in the Orchard range, we found this one to be perfect for family play. It becomes more complex with additional players, so we typically stick to two or three at a time since the children are quite young. I don’t dread playing this game repeatedly; in fact, I feel pleased when it’s chosen from the board games because I genuinely enjoy it. It’s suitable for younger kids but still has a wonderful family appeal, allowing us all to join in. The items are clearly illustrated on the cards, making them easily recognizable and fun for children. The bright colors engage the little ones while introducing them to new concepts. The little detail of having to place the finished meal in the chef’s waiting hands delights my children, who still laugh each time they complete their meal and place it in the hands.

This game is another fantastic addition to our collection from this range. It’s more complex than the shopping list game and can be quite challenging if all the pieces are in play. The small pieces can easily get lost, so care is needed. Even at the full retail price of £8, it’s a fantastic toy that appeals to every child who comes to play. It’s simple yet engaging for younger children and promotes a variety of educational skills, which is wonderful. I would highly recommend this to anyone with young children as it’s the perfect board game.

I purchased this game for my three boys, aged 4, 6, and 10. My 4 and 6-year-olds absolutely love it, and it has really helped them with turn-taking, which is a challenge in our household. My 10-year-old thinks he’s too old for it, but he plays occasionally when his brothers ask and clearly enjoys it.

A quick note: this game is quite similar to the Orchard Toys Shopping List game, which could be seen as either a pro or a con. If you already have the Shopping List game and are looking for something different from Orchard, I’d suggest choosing another option due to the similarities. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic game, and this is just a minor concern. The game pieces are made of thick cardboard, making them durable. The illustrations are vibrant and fun, with a nice variety of ingredients and dishes to ‘cook,’ ranging from cupcakes to kebabs.

In the game, each player selects a chef board featuring seven different ingredients/utensils along with a meal. The main objective is to gather all the ingredients on your board from the face-down cards in the center. If you pick up an ingredient or utensil you need, you place it on your board; if not, you show it to the other players and return it face down, allowing others to remember its location for their turn. Players take turns until one player fills their board with ingredients. On their next turn, they must spin a spinner, first landing on a plate to place on their board. Then, they need to ‘cook’ their meal by spinning and landing on a picture of a ‘child eating.’ The first to complete their meal wins, placing a picture of their finished recipe on the plate, and gameplay continues until everyone has cooked their meal.

The game is simple and enjoyable, though my 10-year-old mentioned that the latter part feels somewhat unnecessary, suggesting it might be better without the spinner. However, this is a minor critique, and overall, our entire family enjoyed the game, which is a definite plus. It promotes memory, turn-taking, and observational skills, and might even inspire children to try new foods. I highly recommend this game, giving it a well-deserved 5 stars. We have loved all the games we’ve purchased from the Orchard Toys range.
