My four-year-old is currently fascinated by mini beasts and creepy crawlies, so I thought this game would be ideal for building his confidence in numbers and counting before starting school; it has done that and so much more! Like all the Orchard Toys games we own (we might be a bit obsessed!), the pieces are exceptionally high quality, chunky, and beautifully illustrated. The instructions and gameplay are straightforward and easy to grasp, which is a huge plus when kids are eager to start playing.
Players take turns spinning the spinner, and everyone picks up the number of cards it lands on. Then you flip over your cards, and everyone counts how many bugs are hiding underneath; this makes it fun and collaborative, allowing everyone to pick up cards regardless of whose turn it is. This design is great for keeping the attention of younger, easily distracted players who tend to lose interest while waiting for their turn.
The player with the most bugs gets to start building their bug, and the first one to complete their bug wins. We usually keep playing after that point so everyone can finish and complete their bug, which is great for my son who isn’t particularly fond of losing!
I’ve been amazed at how much this has boosted his confidence with number recognition and counting. He now instantly recognizes the number he’s spun and can easily count how many bugs he’s collected. Plus, it’s not overly simplistic, so my seven-year-old daughter enjoys playing it with us as well.
There’s also a delightful ‘Bug Hunters Checklist’ included that features many common insects to find in your garden – so far, we’ve discovered 10 out of 24 bugs, so there’s plenty more bug hunting to do this summer! Additionally, there’s a ‘Bug Hunters Fact File’ with simple facts about each bug in the game; my son particularly enjoys learning about what each bug eats.
Like all Orchard Toys games – 10/10 for fun and learning!
