How to Use Cheatwell Games Top Trivia Decades Quiz Game — Beginner Guide

What’s in the box

  • 500 Top Trivia Decades cards (5,000 questions total) covering the 1960s–2010s
  • A printed set of rules (follow these for the official game)
  • Recommended age: 14+

Quick preparation

  1. Open the pack and separate the cards into the supplied stack.
  2. Choose a flat table or surface for play and a timer (phone timer or stopwatch works).
  3. Decide whether you will play in teams or individually. Teams of 2–6 players work best.
  4. Assign a Question Master (QM) for the first round — this person reads questions and checks answers. Rotate QM each round if you like.

Basic setup

  • Shuffle the cards face down or sort by decade if you prefer themed rounds.
  • Decide a target number of rounds or a time limit for the whole game (for example, 10 cards each or 45 minutes).
  • Agree on a time limit per question (suggested: 30–60 seconds) and how many guesses each team gets (suggested: 1–2 guesses).

Playing a round — step by step

  1. The QM draws the top card and announces the decade (if cards are decade-specific) or simply reads the question aloud.
  2. The active team or player has the agreed time limit to answer.
  3. If the answer is correct, award points (see Scoring below). If incorrect, either pass to the next team or move to the next question depending on your house rules.
  4. After the question is resolved, the next team/player becomes active (or the next QM reads the next card if you rotate QM).
  5. Continue until you reach the pre-agreed number of cards/rounds or the time limit expires.

Scoring and determining the winner

  • Standard beginner scoring: 1 point per correct answer.
  • You can award bonus points for special achievements (example: +1 bonus for answering 3 questions in a row correctly; +2 for a decade sweep on a multi-question card).
  • If teams are tied at the end, use a sudden-death tiebreaker question: first to answer correctly wins.
  • Add up all points at the end — the team or player with the highest total wins.

Beginner-friendly variations

  • Quick Play — pick 10 random cards and play until they are used; highest score wins.
  • Decade Night — choose one decade and play only cards from that decade for themed competition.
  • Speed Round — give 60 seconds for as many answers as a team can provide from a single multi-question card.
  • Help Option — allow one “phone-a-friend” or hint per team per game for beginners.

Tips for beginners

  • Read the printed rules included with the pack for any card-specific instructions before starting.
  • Use a visible scoreboard (paper or phone) so everyone can follow the score.
  • Encourage discussion within teams but set a clear time limit to keep the game moving.
  • If a question is unclear, the QM should re-read it once and allow one clarification.
  • Have fun and don’t worry about getting everything right — the game is designed to cover wide-ranging pop culture and general knowledge from six decades.

Care and storage

  • Store cards in their original box to keep them flat and protected.
  • Avoid exposing cards to moisture or direct sunlight.
  • Keep the rules card with the pack so new players can learn the official setup.

Enjoy testing your knowledge of music, film, TV, science, food & drink, sport and culture from the 1960s through the 2010s!
