How to Use Cheatwell Games Family Quiz Night — Beginner’s Guide
What’s in the Box
- Playing board
- Playing pieces (for each player/team)
- Die
- 8 decks of question cards (TV, Geography, History, Science & Nature, Movies, People, Music, Pot Luck)
- 1200 unique question cards (each card contains a multiple-choice junior question and a more challenging adult question)
- Rule booklet
Setup (3 minutes)
- Open the box and place the playing board on a flat surface everyone can reach.
- Sort the 8 decks of question cards and place each deck on its matching board space or in a central pile if there are no marked spots.
- Each player (or team) chooses a playing piece and places it on the board’s start space.
- Decide who goes first (youngest player, roll the die—highest starts, or volunteer).
Basic Gameplay (beginner-friendly rules)
- On your turn:
- Roll the die and move your piece forward the number of spaces shown.
- Pick a question card from the deck for the category you landed on (or draw from a central pile if categories aren’t marked).
- Choose which question to ask:
- If you have mixed ages, use the junior multiple-choice question for younger players and the adult question for older players.
- If all players are adults, use the adult question printed on the card.
- The reader (another player or the active player) reads the chosen question aloud along with the answer options if it’s multiple choice.
- If the active player/team answers correctly:
- They either move an extra space (for a simple move-based game) or score a point — decide which scoring method before you start.
- If the answer is incorrect:
- No extra move or point is awarded. Optionally, allow the next player a chance to steal for a bonus.
- Play continues clockwise until someone reaches the finish space on the board or achieves the agreed target score.
Suggested Scoring Options (choose one)
- First to Finish: Correct answers let you move forward; first piece to reach the finish wins.
- Point Race: Each correct answer = 1 point; first to 10 (or another target) points wins.
- Team Play: Form teams, combine scores, and take turns; great for keeping kids and adults balanced.
Tips for Beginners
- Start with short games (target 5–7 points) to learn the flow quickly.
- Use the junior question for younger players to keep the game fun and fast-paced.
- If a question causes disagreement, agree in advance to consult the card’s answer (no debate) or a quick online check.
- Rotate the role of question reader so everyone gets a turn answering.
Game Variations
- Quick Quiz: No board — simply draw cards in turn. Each correct answer = 1 point; first to 15 wins.
- Challenge Mode: If a player answers an adult question correctly while a child attempts it, award a bonus point to encourage mixed-age competition.
- Category Master: Players must answer a question from each category before they can attempt the finish space.
End of Game and Cleanup
- When the game ends, celebrate the winner and optionally play another round with different scoring.
- Gather cards, playing pieces, die, and board, and return them to the box to keep everything together.
- Store in a dry place to protect the cards for many future family quiz nights.
